Tips to Protect your Preschool Kids from Air Pollution

Living in metropolitan cities can be highly advantageous for your children in terms of opportunities in a plethora of domains. However, it can be equally hazardous for your health. Air pollution thrives in urban societies and residencies, all thanks to ever-increasing industrialization and urbanization. Keeping the current health scenario in mind, it is of utmost importance to protect your child’s little lungs from the dreadful claws of air pollution. Along the same lines, Medhaam daycare in Delhi brings to you a handful of tips that can help you in doing so.

Keep an eye on the AQI.
Abbreviated as the “Air Quality Index”, AQI determines the quality of the air. A normal AQI should be 100 or less than 100. But when it comes to metropolitan cities such as Delhi, Delhi NCR, etc., the AQI generally ranges between 350 to 490 which is hazardous. While it can cause a deterioration in the health of the residents of the city, it can also lead to the incidence of chronic diseases. Since children have low immunity, they can become the first victims of such diseases in a family. So, it’s important to check the AQI from time to time. You will be able to determine what time of day the air is the least hazardous and what time of day it is at its most dangerous. By doing so, you can even fix your kids’ playing slots.

Always make them wear a mask outdoors.
Apart from their playing time, make sure that whenever your kid steps outside, he or she is wearing a mask. This can help in keeping the toxicity in the air from entering their lungs to a great extent. Every kid at our play preschool wears a mask while stepping out. In order to make a habit out of this, you can purchase colorful masks with cartoon characters on them.

Prefer fans over ACs.
Today, almost every Indian household has ACs. When an AC is turned on, the microorganisms inside it as well as the dust and grime are released into the air. This can also be detrimental to your child. So, it is recommended to switch on fans over ACs from time to time. This is what we do at our kindergarten and daycare.

Keep your child in a no-smoking zone 24*7.
Smoking parents, this is for you! It goes without saying that smoking is extremely hazardous to anyone’s health, and it is of the utmost importance to be aware of the fact that breathing in toxic air is on par with smoking. Nobody should smoke, and if you do smoke, please don’t do that in your residential premises or anywhere where kids are present.

Clean surroundings can be of great help.
Dust can accumulate anywhere. And this goes for bacteria too. So, it becomes imperative to observe high standards of cleanliness and hygiene especially when children are a part of your family. In this way, there is a decreased likelihood that you will become infected with pathogenic bacteria, viruses, or germs.

Keep air-cleansing plants in and out of the house.
Plants and trees are good suppliers of clean air or oxygen, and they also reduce the effects that poisonous air has on the environment. Apart from having a lush green garden, you can also have some ornamental plants inside your house that will not only escalate your decor but will also cleanse the air. Some of them include jade, money plant, lily, bamboo, etc.

Consuming immune system stimulants.
Supplements? Not at all. We encourage you to consume immune system stimulants such as honey, turmeric, and tulsi water along with your children. These won’t only help you in detoxifying your body but will also keep cold, cough, and other breathing-related issues at bay. Salt gargles can be extremely helpful in combatting air pollution.
