How to Teach Kids the Harmful Effects of Junk Food?

The consumption of junk food stands out to be one of the most difficult things to curb out of the lives of your children. And guess what, you parents and the teachers at your child’s preschool are the whole-sole influencers in this case. At Medhaam best preschool Gurgaon, we make sure that your children have healthy meals and even encourage them through a plethora of fun activities. Today, we will share with you some of the easiest ways to encourage healthy eating at home sweet home too. Here you go:

Set an example.
If you eat a large cheese pizza too often, then you cannot stop your kids from not having pizza or any other junk item, for that matter. So, you need to be your child’s role model. Adopt healthier habits at home. Ask other family members to cooperate too. If you and the rest of the family will decide not to have junk, your kids will automatically understand that its not good to have such items and will stop asking for them.

Go for healthier substitutes.
Well, you cannot subside cravings and when it is in the case of children, it’s even tougher. Parents are advised to make similar but healthier substitutes whenever your child craves for junk food. Do moderate their intake and keep a record. You can also reserve consumption for special occassions such as winning a competition, completing Math homework in stipulated time etc. Constantly telling kids to eat healthy foods will make them unattractive in their heads. So, present them with healthy and tasty options instead.
Not only in the consumption part, but now, you can also engage your kid in making such healthier substitutes. Ask them to assist you in the kitchen. Teach them the basics. Worried about not having great culinary skills? Well, how about learning together? Overrcome your reservations and make this fun for your kid. At Medhaam, the best preschool Gurgaon, we often organize cooking without fire and many such activities where we make sure that your kids are well-versed with the basics of cooking. In order to pique their interest, you can watch cooking shows with them. MasterChef Junior is a great show, for starters.

Remove distractions while eating and try to have your meals together.
Another great way is to remove distractions such as television, video games etc. during meals. This can discourage your kids from munching anything while watching their favorite cartoon or movie or playing their favorite video game.
In addition to that, try to spare some time and have meals together. With so many extracurricular activities happening over the dinner hour it is becoming more difficult for families to eat together.  Protect this time as much as possible since research shows families that eat together have better nutrient intakes, less risk of obesity, less risk of eating disorders, and kids that perform better academically.

Eating together is one of the few times that families get to connect together and check in about challenges. So, start eating as many supper meals together as possible. If you are working, then you can consider having breakfasts together on Sundays.

Always give a way out.
Might sound stupid but food scientists have shown that kids are more likely to stick to healthy food if they know that they have a way out. If you decide what the kid should eat, then give the right of eating how much to your kid. Instead of coaxing them to have a bite, you can simply give them the option of eating as much as it suits them and then stop. Offer them a napkin. In this manner, you can also teach them table manners.

So, these were certain ways of teaching your kids how to manage junk food consumption. At Medhaam, we make sure that kids are consuming nutritious food in between activities and lessons through tasks and games. Wish to get your child enrolled in the best daycare preschool?
