Five Ways to Celebrate Dussehra at Home with your Kids

Dussehra is a festival of the victory of good over evil. It is a festival of joy and celebration. And this makes it all the way more exciting for kids. Going to fairs, seeing the gigantic yet magnificent effigy of Ravana getting burnt and much more is so much fun! With Dussehra round the corner, Medhaam childcare and kindergarten brings to five fabulous ways of celebrating the festival with kids at home.

  • It’s ethnic day!

The best ways to make Dussehra even more exciting for your kid is by wearing ethnic clothes. Your daughter and you can twin by wearing a lehenga, suit or saree of the same design or color. Sons can twin up by wearing a kurta-pajama of the same color. At Medhaam daycare and kindergarten, we organize ethnic ramp walks for kids so that they learn how to gracefully carry ethnic clothes out in the public. You can also teach them by making them wear vibrant and retty ethnic clothing at home. Don’t forget to get family photos clicked!

  • Rangoli-making and kalash-decoration

No Indian festival can be complete without making a rangoli at the threshold, giving gifts and eating sweets. Rangoli-making and even earthern-pot (kalash) decoration can bring out the creative side of your child. At Medhaamchildcare and kindergarten, we take extra care and ask children to make Rangoli using flower petals instead of toxic colours. You can also do that. For kalash decoration, you can provide your chil with mild glue, mirrors, gotta etc.

  • Eating sweets and giving gifts

You and your child can go and shop for gifts for loved ones. These can include pens, diya and other small items. This will teach your kids the gesture of giving and the importance of spreading smiles.

Sweets are a bliss! On Dussehra, you can either make kheer or gulab jamun at home with ease. Make sure that the dessert you pick isn’t too complicated so that your child can help you out. Ask your child to assist you in the kitchen. You can even make a delicious fruit custard with your child.

  • Creating a paper puppet of Ravana

Every Dussehra, we make a paper puppet of the evil king Ravana at Medhaam childcare and kindergarten. Children also make Ram and Ravana face masks. You can do this too! Get the paper puppet Ravana set and help your child to build his/her own puppet. You can even make one using paper mache. At Medhaam, we do not promote burning of the puppet as it is a symbol of violence and also yields into smoke clouds polluting the entire atmosphere. Since early years is a very impressionable age and environment is equally important, please refrain from burning the puppet. These very values inspire the children to the greatest extent.

  • Initiating story telling sessions

Kids love stories and mythological lores are a treat for the ears. This Dussehra, initiate a story telling session for your kid. You can even use small and basic props while narrating the tale of Ram and Ravana. At Medhaam daycare and kindergarten, we organize a Ramleela wherein the teachers also involve the students. Such sessions not only enhance the merriment but also make the children acquainted with the nuances of our Indian culture. In addition to that, these very traditions and stroy-telling sessions keep our children connected to their roots which is of paramount importance in today’s world.

In addition to bringing good luck and prosperity, this Dussehra spend some quality time with your kid via these fabulous five activities. Medhaam childcare and preschool wishes you and your family a very Happy Dussehra in advance!
