How to Teach Children Digital Resilience

The importance of instilling resilience in kids is well-known in Indian parenthood. We always want our kids to stand strong despite adversities, to come out of uncontrollable circumstances, and recover from traumatic events. But when it comes to digital resilience, a majority of parents remain clueless. They end up replacing their blank canvas with “resilience against technology” which seems to be an absurd idea in this fast-paced world. At Medhaam nursery and daycare, we make sure that parents have an equal contribution in making their kids digitally resilient as the school. So, in order to enlighten the parents of all the kids enrolled in our kindergarten and daycare, we bring to you a lucid idea of what digital resilience is and why it is so important for your kids.

What do we mean by ‘digital resilience’?
As per the Digital Resilience Working Group, The UK Council for Child Internet Safety, digital resilience can be defined as having the ability to identify the situation of being at risk online and having a problem-solving approach towards it. Here, a problem-solving approach means being able to land upon solutions when something goes wrong and being able to implement them, thus recovering from such situations. The Group has also formulated a framework that can help parents in understanding this concept better:
Understand: The kid needs to understand and identify the situations of being at risk online.
Know: A kid should be well-versed with the sources that can help him/her out if he/she are at risk online.
Recover: Recovering and moving on when things go wrong online. This also involves appropriate aid.
Learn: A kid should remember these experiences and should take healthy lessons from them to prevent the occurrence of such incidences in the future.

Importance of digital resilience
In today’s fast-paced world, children use technology at an unprecedented rate. While physical games or other distractions can be kept at bay, the constant presence of TV, phones, and tablets can easily lure your kids. In addition to the difficult-to-escape tendency, these gadgets give your kids easy access to the world opening doors of opportunities as well as threats for your kids.
Since the past few years, there has been an increase in online harassment and cyber bullying of minor users. On top of that, the pandemic years of schooling have changed things for the worse.
Most of the incidents are hard for adults to detect. Sometimes, they happen in private spaces and sometimes, the child isn’t very upfront about it. So, it’s important to inculcate digital resilience in your kids so that they can understand, know, recover and learn from unhealthy online experiences smoothly and swiftly. Now, the question is how to go about making your kid digitally resilient.

Develop digital resilience in your kids
At Medhaam preschool daycare, we make sure that if a kid is facing any such problem even during minimal online interaction, our dedicated teachers are by their side.

Teach them their boundaries.
It is important to teach kids their boundaries. The sooner you do it, the better it is. The moment you see your children enjoying their time on TV, PC, phone, or tablet, keep track of how much time they spend online. By regulating their space, you teach them that they are always in control of usage and most importantly, there is a world beyond the screen.

Help your child make informed choices
Once your kids start developing an affinity for the online world via messaging platforms, online videos, etc., it’s important to help them make informed choices. You can teach them the difference between friends and strangers, how to control their privacy settings, and their role as future digital citizens of the country. At Medhaam daycare preschool, we teach such things in a fun manner. You can also try them out.

While your child is getting digitally resilient, it’s your responsibility to block inappropriate sites that have uncensored adult content. You can use the “Google Safe Search” option to make browsing safe for your kids.
